FRM Thanks Kickstarter Campaign Supporters
FRM thanks everyone for donating to our “Taking the Plunge” Kickstarter fundraiser campaign and for spreading the word. Funds raised through this campaign will aid FRM with the completion of its documentary film “Taking the Plunge” and continue its lifesaving mission of helping eliminate the FEAR of being in or around water.
Director of the film, Shawnelle King, explains that everybody knows at least one person that cannot swim, or who doesn’t like water, or who is just plain scared of it and believes this film will help them. She urges everyone not to become a statistic. She hopes any fearful swimmer who views this film will be motivated to let go of the nagging fear of getting into the water, a fear that affects millions of Americans. King hopes the film will encourage fearful swimmers to take one step closer towards learning how to swim.
Nearly 3,600 unintentional drowning deaths occur annually in the United States. That averages to about ten people per day. Of these, two are children aged 14 or younger. A national research study conducted by the USA Swimming Foundation and the University of Memphis revealed fear of drowning (on the part of children and their parents) was the number one reason most minorities lack the ability to swim.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention reports drowning as the 5th ranked cause of unintentional deaths among all ages and the #2 cause of unintentional deaths among children in the United States ages 1 to 14.
